Palestine is Not for Sale - Gaza is Not a Real Estate Project

As a union of university professors and employees in Palestine, it is incumbent upon us to educate. The most recent statements from the current head of the US empire, Donald Trump, are nothing more than a continuation of more than a century of colonial violence. The basic clarity of treating the world as their own property is perhaps the only surprising part of this most recent iteration of colonial oppression. Like four generations of Palestinians before us, we adamantly refuse the nefarious intentions of colonial imperialism of the current US administration and its allies.
This kind of colonial gaze that sees a land without a people is not new to Palestinians. As Palestinians recently heard the president of the US empire speak of "developing" a sea-side resort in Gaza, he was echoing the desires of empire and settler colonialism for more than a century. Harnessing the most basic audacity of capitalism's cruelty in the typical language of real estate development, Trump represents the banal result of the history of colonialism and imperialism. While cruel and violent, this is neither new, nor surprising for Palestinians. After all, Palestinians can and do teach this history of colonialism as a core part of our resistance to it. However grand, or in the case of Trump, dazed and confused, these plans may be, we also teach how unrealizable they are, as they have always been.
Palestine is not for sale. Gaza is not a development project. Neither the sea nor the mountains are real estate projects... Palestine will be free, from the river to the sea. But we want to take this opportunity to teach. The kind of real estate rhetoric of Trump's is at the core of the colonial-capital matrix, where the attempted genocide of an entire people is justified as the means to bring about real estate development and turn Palestine into a commodity for sale. We, all Palestinian, reject every element of this equation.
It is a shame that such criminal rhetoric can be so easily employed in so-called international diplomacy, even though it circumvents all of the basic rules of international human rights law. It is even more audacious in light of last year's cases at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) brought about by several international governments at the heart of international advocacy against the settler state. We honor this ongoing work in the Hague Group. Our self-determination is not confined to these international arenas, courts or parliaments. We know, as our allies do, like those among the Hague Group and so many others throughout the world, that our self-determination represents the future, one where the likes of Trump are mere footnotes in the history of how Palestine led the world in getting free.

Palestina is Niet te Koop - Gaza is Geen Vastgoedproject

De Leraren en Medewerkers Vakbond van de Birzeit Universiteit in Palestina heeft een urgente verklaring uitgebracht. Lees de verklaring hieronder.
Als vakbond van universiteitsprofessoren en werknemers in Palestina is het onze plicht om te onderwijzen. De meest recente uitspraken van het huidige hoofd van het Amerikaanse imperium, Donald Trump, zijn niets meer dan een voortzetting van meer dan een eeuw koloniaal geweld. De basale helderheid waarmee ze de wereld als hun eigendom beschouwen, is misschien wel het enige verrassende aan deze meest recente iteratie van koloniale onderdrukking. Net als vier generaties Palestijnen voor ons, verwerpen we met klem de kwaadaardige intenties van koloniaal imperialisme van de huidige Amerikaanse regering en haar bondgenoten.
Deze koloniale kijk die een land zonder volk ziet, is niet nieuw voor Palestijnen. Toen Palestijnen onlangs de president van het Amerikaanse imperium hoorden spreken over het “ontwikkelen” van een resort aan zee in Gaza, echode hij de eeuwenoude verlangens van imperium en nederzettingenkolonialisme. Door de meest elementaire brutaliteit van de wreedheid van het kapitalisme te gebruiken in de typische taal van vastgoedontwikkeling, vertegenwoordigt Trump het banale resultaat van de geschiedenis van kolonialisme en imperialisme. Hoewel dit wreed en gewelddadig is, is het niet nieuw en ook niet verrassend voor Palestijnen. Palestijnen onderwijzen deze geschiedenis van kolonialisme immers als een kernonderdeel van ons verzet ertegen. Hoe groots, of in het geval van Trump, verdwaasd en verward, deze plannen ook mogen zijn, we tonen ook hoe onrealiseerbaar ze zijn, zoals ze altijd al zijn geweest.
Palestina is niet te koop. Gaza is geen ontwikkelingsproject. Noch de zee, noch de bergen zijn vastgoedprojecten... Palestina zal vrij zijn, van de rivier tot de zee. Maar we willen van deze gelegenheid gebruikmaken om te onderwijzen. Het soort vastgoedretoriek van Trump is de kern van de koloniaal-kapitaalmatrix, waarin de poging tot genocide op een heel volk wordt gerechtvaardigd als middel om vastgoedontwikkeling te bewerkstelligen en Palestina te veranderen in handelswaar voor verkoop. Wij, allen Palestijns, verwerpen elk element van deze vergelijking.
Het is een schande dat een dergelijke criminele retoriek zo gemakkelijk kan worden gebruikt in de zogenaamde internationale diplomatie, ook al omzeilt het alle basisregels van de internationale mensenrechtenwetgeving. Het is nog brutaler in het licht van de zaken die vorig jaar voor het Internationaal Strafhof (ICC) en het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ) werden aangespannen door verschillende internationale regeringen die de kern vormen van de internationale strijd tegen de kolonistenstaat. We prijzen dit lopende werk in the Hague Group. Onze zelfbeschikking is niet beperkt tot deze internationale arena's, rechtbanken of parlementen. Wij weten, net als onze bondgenoten, zoals die van the Hague Group en zoveel anderen over de hele wereld, dat onze zelfbeschikking de toekomst vertegenwoordigt, een toekomst waarin mensen zoals Trump slechts voetnoten zijn in de geschiedenis van hoe Palestina de wereld leidde in bevrijding.
