Tour: Academia in the face of genocide

In the week of the 23rd of September Professor Neve Gordon will visit Dutch Universities. During this tour he will give a lecture titled ‘Academia in the Face of Genocide’. In this talk, Gordon will discuss the response of academic institutions to the genocidal violence perpetrated in the Gaza Strip. After highlighting the destruction of education and particularly higher education in Gaza, Gordon will analyse the different strategies universities in Europe and Israel have adopted to silence Palestinian and pro-Palestinian speech and activism while stressing both the Palestinian exception and the clampdown’s connection to the ‘marketisation of the university’ and the rise of extreme right-wing politics.
Neve Gordon is a Professor of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law at Queen Mary University of London and the Vice President of the British Society for Middle East Studies. His research focuses on international humanitarian law, human rights, the ethics of violence, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He is the author of Israel’s Occupation (University of California Press 2008) and co-author of The Human Right to Dominate (Oxford University Press, 2015) and Human Shields: A History of People in the Line of Fire (University of California Press, 2020). Gordon is the former Chair of BRISMES’s Committee on Academic Freedom, and writes regularly for the popular press.

In de week van 23 september zal professor Neve Gordon verschillende Nederandse universiteiten bezoeken. Tijdens deze tour zal hij een lezing geven getiteld 'Academia in the Face of Genocide'. In deze lezing zal Gordon het hebben over de reactie van academische instellingen op het genocidale geweld in de Gazastrook. Na het belichten van de verwoesting van het onderwijs - en in het bijzonder het hoger onderwijs - in Gaza, zal Gordon de verschillende strategieën analyseren die universiteiten in Europa en Israël hebben aangenomen om Palestijnse en pro-Palestijnse uitingen en activisme het zwijgen op te leggen. Daarbij zal hij zowel de nadruk leggen op de ‘Palestinian exception’ (de Palestijnse uitzondering) als op het verband tussen de repressie en de 'vermarkting van de universiteit' evenals de opkomst van extreemrechts.
Neve Gordon is professor mensenrechten en internationaal humanitair recht aan Queen Mary University of London en vicevoorzitter van de British Society for Middle East Studies. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op internationaal humanitair recht, mensenrechten, de ethiek van geweld en het Israëlisch-Palestijnse conflict. Hij is de auteur van Israel's Occupation (University of California Press 2008) en co-auteur van The Human Right to Dominate (Oxford University Press, 2015) en Human Shields: A History of People in the Line of Fire (University of California Press, 2020). Gordon is de voormalige voorzitter van de Commissie Academische Vrijheid van BRISMES en schrijft regelmatig voor de populaire pers.

Book Tour: How israeli universities deny Palestinian freedom
This May, Dr. Maya Wind will tour the Netherlands with her new book titled: ‘Towers of Ivory and Steel’.
Israeli universities have long enjoyed a reputation as liberal bastions of freedom and democracy. Drawing on extensive research and making Hebrew sources accessible to the international community, Maya Wind shatters this myth and documents how Israeli universities are directly complicit in the violation of Palestinian rights. Academic disciplines, degree programs, campus infrastructure, and research laboratories all service Israeli occupation and apartheid, while universities violate the rights of Palestinians to education, stifle critical scholarship, and violently repress student dissent. A powerful exposé of Israeli academia’s ongoing and active complicity in Israel’s settler-colonial project.
Dr. Maya Wind is a Killam Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. Her research on the reproduction and international export of Israeli security expertise has been supported by the Canadian National Science Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, and the Canadian Killam Laureates Trust.

In mei toert Dr. Maya Wind door Nederland met haar nieuwe boek getiteld: 'Towers of Ivory and Steel'.
Israëlische universiteiten hebben lang de reputatie gehad liberale bolwerken van vrijheid en democratie te zijn. Op basis van uitgebreid onderzoek en door Hebreeuwse bronnen toegankelijk te maken voor de internationale gemeenschap, verbrijzelt Maya Wind deze mythe en documenteert hoe Israëlische universiteiten direct medeplichtig zijn aan de schending van Palestijnse rechten. Academische disciplines, studieprogramma's, campusinfrastructuur en onderzoekslaboratoria staan allemaal in dienst van de Israëlische bezetting en apartheid, terwijl universiteiten het recht van Palestijnen op onderwijs schenden, kritische wetenschap in de kiem smoren en afwijkende meningen van studenten met geweld onderdrukken. Een krachtige onthulling van de voortdurende en actieve medeplichtigheid van de Israëlische academische wereld aan het koloniale project van Israël.
