Denounce Genocide and Defend Education and Knowledge in Palestine
– A call to action to the executive boards of higher educational institutions in the Netherlands

This statement by Dutch Scholars for Palestine can be used as a template to be sent to the heads of your educational institution. Feel free to customize it accordingly. The statement includes testimony from a professor from Gaza, a summary of the genocidal assault on education and knowledge in Palestine and a call to action to all heads of educational institutions in the Netherlands. Testimony by Prof. Dr. Muhammed Ibrahim Migdad
On January 14th 2024 a member from DSP spoke with Prof. Dr. Muhammed Ibrahim Migdad, an Economics university professor from Gaza. You can find his testimony below. With thanks to Rahma Bavelaar for Professor Migdad’s testimony.
“Good morning colleagues, I'm speaking from Rafah, at the border between Gaza and Egypt because I couldn't find internet anywhere else. I'm Muhammad Ibrahim Migdad, 62 years old, professor of economics. I graduated from the UK, Bradford, Development and Project Planning Center in 1999. I came back to Gaza directly after graduation to work as a consultant for the Ministry of Planning and International Relations with Dr. Ali Shaath, as well as an academic for different Palestinian universities. I taught different economic courses such as econometrics, managerial economics, micro- and macro economics as well as research methodology for MA and PhD students at different Palestinian universities.
Even before the war, I was working for a partial salary for many months, due to the ongoing Israeli blockade of Gaza. In this war everything was destroyed. The Israeli military occupation partially or completely destroyed several of the universities where I was teaching: al-Azhar University, al-Quds University, Palestine University and the Islamic University of Gaza. I expect that it will take more than three years to restart education in Gaza, if the war were finished now. Rebuilding the schools and infrastructure in Gaza will take more than ten years, because more than 70% has been destroyed.
My wife, two daughters and one son live with me in Gaza. We lived in a flat in AlKatiba in Gaza City before 7 October 2023. This flat was destroyed in Israeli air raids, so we moved to my daughter's flat in Tal al-Hawa. This area was also destroyed. We then moved to my son's house in Al-Mughraga in Middle Gaza. This area is no longer safe because it is overseen by the Eastern Gaza border- where the occupation ground invasion into Gaza started, as there are fewer buildings in that area compared to other areas at the Eastern line- and so we moved again to Rafah. Our family lost three flats and a three story building in Al-Mughraga. We were displaced seven times. Each time we fled to find safety, more people were added to the group and more resources were left behind (clothing and food) because we were not able to carry more than one bag each.
More than once, I returned to places we had fled from, including North Gaza and Middle Gaza, to retrieve food, gas canisters, drinkable water, winter clothing for my granddaughter and the baby my daughter gave birth to while we were fleeing. I brought cooking utensils and toys for my grandchildren. I crawled through the rubble of my own home and got injured while carrying things as quickly as I could. Each of these trips was life threatening. One time I was one block away from invading tanks. In Rafah, I stayed with my daughter in the hospital while she was giving birth while hospitals across the area were being targeted and threatened that week. Weeks after my granddaughter was born, I rode a bicycle back to the hospital to get the documents she needed to leave Gaza with her parents. Since last month, sewage has been coming up in homes and in the streets as a result of heavy rains and buildings being used beyond human capacity. With my injured arm, I had to remove raw sewage with a bucket in order to protect the sleeping area of my family. My family has survived until now, but we are facing death every minute.
I have lectured in economic courses, research methodology and quantitative data analysis for more than thirty years in different Palestinian universities. This is my life and this is my world. I was very happy doing this work and could not imagine it could suddenly end. We had international relations with universities in European countries and Turkey as well as projects with Palestinian universities, including academic exchange. Last year I joined an exchange with Istanbul Technical University and other colleagues went to Spain, the UK and other European countries.
My colleagues, what happened in Gaza is only killing and destroying. There is no safe place in Gaza. We assume that you academics in European countries can do something for us. First, we need from you to exert pressure to stop the war on Gaza and to stop the killing. You can also help after the war to help restart higher education in Gaza. Maybe by supporting the online education after the rebuilding of the infrastructure of internet and electricity. Some Palestinian academics can teach at your universities for some years, until they can return to rebuild the field of education in Gaza.”

Condemning Israel’s genocidal attack on education and knowledge in Palestine
We, members of Dutch Scholars for Palestine, strongly condemn Israel’s ongoing assault on education in Palestine, destruction of all universities in Gaza and recurring attacks on higher-education institutions in the West Bank and the rest of Palestine as part of its genocidal campaign.
On 17 January 2024, Israeli forces blew up Al-Israa University in Gaza City, the last standing university in Gaza. In response, Birzeit University released the following statement, “Birzeit University condemns the brutal assault and bombing of Al-Israa University campus by the Israeli occupation south of Gaza city, this occurred after seventy days of the occupation occupying the campus; turning it into their base, and military barracks for their forces”. They also reported that a museum established by Al-Israa University which housed more than 3,000 rare artefacts was destroyed in the attack after being looted by the occupation forces.
Palestinian scholars in Gaza are being targeted and killed by Israel in the ongoing genocidal assault. On 2 December 2023, an Israeli airstrike in the Al-Falujah neighbourhood of Gaza killed Professor Sufyan Tayeh, a leading physicist, applied mathematician, and President of Islamic University of Gaza. On 7 December 2023, Refaat Alareer, Professor of Comparative Literature and acclaimed poet, was killed by an Israeli airstrike in Shajaiya in northern Gaza. Since 7 October 2023, the Israeli army has killed hundreds of teachers, thousands of students and at least 94 university professors. United Nations issued a joint statement on 24 January 2024, highlighting the unprecedented level of violence in Gaza, with over 625,000 students and 22,564 teachers deprived of education and a safe place, and thousands of education personnel killed.
Academic institutions, scholars and students in the West-Bank and the rest of Palestine are regularly arrested, detained without charge, or harassed by Israeli forces. Birzeit University has been raided over 20 times between 2002 and September 2023, and was most recently targeted on 8 November 2023. Professor Imad Barghouti, a prominent astrophysicist at Al-Quds University was arrested on 23 October 2023, and remains detained without charge. On 15 January 2024, Israeli forces raided An-Najah University in Nablus, assaulted staff and arrested 25 students who were staging a peaceful sit-in. Palestinian students at Israeli universities face a hostile environment, with an institutional push for suspension and expulsion, and academic institutions are actively collaborating with Israeli police to target Palestinians. At least 74 students from 25 different Israeli institutions have been suspended for their social media posts. On 19 November 2023, Israeli police arrested four female students of Nof HaGalil Technology College at dawn, with their family homes raided and searched, merely for their interaction with social media posts about the war.
Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh, one of the lawyers on the South African legal team at the International Court of Justice on 11 January 2024, said: “Almost 90,000 Palestinian university students cannot attend university in Gaza. Over 60 per cent of schools, almost all universities and countless bookshops and libraries have been damaged or destroyed, and hundreds of teachers and academics have been killed, including deans of universities and leading Palestinian scholars, obliterating the very prospects for the future education of Gaza’s children and young people”.
We, members of Dutch Scholars for Palestine, urge the executive boards of all Dutch universities and other higher education institutions to condemn the genocide, scholasticide and epistemicide perpetrated by Israel across Palestine.
Accordingly, we issue the following urgent call to action to the executive boards of all universities and other higher education institutions in the Netherlands:
Publicly condemn and call for an end to the genocide that is being perpetrated by Israel in Gaza, Palestine.
Immediately issue a public statement condemning the Israeli onslaught of Palestinian universities, schools and other institutions of higher education and the killing of academics, teachers and students; and expressing unequivocal solidarity with universities and teachers in Gaza and Palestine as a whole.
Create emergency fellowships for researchers, educators and students from Gaza and other parts of Palestine who are interested in coming to work or study in the Netherlands.
Build partnerships with Palestinian universities and academics and facilitate creation of (online) courses on Palestine taught by Palestinian scholars.
Veroordeel genocide en verdedig onderwijs en kennis in Palestina

Een getuigenis van Prof. Dr. Muhammed Ibrahim Migdad
Op 14 januari 2024 sprak een lid van DSP met Prof. Dr. Muhammed Ibrahim Migdad, een universiteitsprofessor economie uit Gaza. U kunt zijn getuigenis hieronder vinden. Met dank aan Rahma Bavelaar voor de getuigenis van professor Migdad.
"Goedemorgen collega's, ik spreek vanuit Rafah, aan de grens tussen Gaza en Egypte, omdat ik nergens anders internet kon vinden. Ik ben Muhammad Ibrahim Migdad, 62 jaar oud, en professor in de economie. Ik ben afgestudeerd in het VK, aan de Bradford, Development and Project Planning Center in 1999. Ik kwam direct na mijn afstuderen terug naar Gaza om te werken als adviseur voor het ministerie van Planning en Internationale Betrekkingen met Dr. Ali Shaath, en als academicus voor verschillende Palestijnse universiteiten. Ik doceerde verschillende economische vakken zoals econometrie, bestuurseconomie, micro- en macro-economie en onderzoeksmethodologie voor MA- en PhD-studenten aan verschillende Palestijnse universiteiten.
Al voor de oorlog werkte ik maandenlang voor een partieel salaris, vanwege de voortdurende Israëlische blokkade van Gaza. In deze oorlog werd alles verwoest. De Israëlische militaire bezetting vernietigde verschillende universiteiten die ik les gaf gedeeltelijk of volledig: al-Azhar Universiteit, al-Quds Universiteit, Palestijnse Universiteit en de Islamitische Universiteit van Gaza. Ik verwacht dat het meer dan drie jaar zal duren om het onderwijs in Gaza weer op te starten, als de oorlog nu afgelopen zou zijn. De wederopbouw van de scholen en de infrastructuur in Gaza zal meer dan 10 jaar in beslag nemen, omdat meer dan 70% verwoest is.
Mijn vrouw, twee dochters en een zoon wonen bij mij in Gaza. Voor 7 oktober 2023 woonden we in een flat in AlKatiba in Gaza Stad. Deze flat werd verwoest door Israëlische luchtaanvallen, dus verhuisden we naar de flat van mijn dochter in Tal al-Hawa. Dit gebied werd ook verwoest. Daarna verhuisden we naar het huis van mijn zoon in Al-Mughraga in Midden-Gaza. Dit gebied is niet langer veilig omdat het onder toezicht staat van de oostelijke grens van Gaza - waar de grondinvasie van de bezetting in Gaza begon, omdat er in dat gebied minder gebouwen staan dan in andere gebieden aan de oostelijke grens - en dus verhuisden we weer naar Rafah. Onze familie verloor drie flats en een gebouw van drie verdiepingen in Al-Mughraga. We zijn zeven keer ontheemd geweest. Elke keer dat we op zoek gingen naar veiligheid, werden er meer mensen aan de groep toegevoegd en werden er meer middelen achtergelaten (kleding en voedsel) omdat we niet meer dan één tas per persoon konden dragen.
Meer dan eens keerde ik terug naar plaatsen waar we vandaan gevlucht waren, waaronder Noord-Gaza en Midden-Gaza, om voedsel, gasflessen, drinkbaar water, winterkleding voor mijn kleindochter en de baby die mijn dochter op de vlucht kreeg, op te halen. Ik heb kookgerei en speelgoed voor mijn kleinkinderen meegenomen. Ik kroop door het puin van mijn eigen huis en raakte gewond terwijl ik dingen zo snel mogelijk droeg. Elk van deze tochten was levensbedreigend. Eén keer was ik een huizenblok verwijderd van binnenvallende tanks. In Rafah bleef ik bij mijn dochter in het ziekenhuis terwijl ze aan het bevallen was, terwijl ziekenhuizen die week in het hele gebied het doelwit waren van aanvallen en bedreigd werden. Weken nadat mijn kleindochter was geboren, fietste ik terug naar het ziekenhuis om de documenten te halen die ze nodig had om Gaza met haar ouders te verlaten. Sinds vorige maand komt er rioolwater in huizen en op straat als gevolg van hevige regenval en gebouwen die boven de menselijke capaciteit worden gebruikt. Met mijn gewonde arm moest ik het rioolwater met een emmer verwijderen om het slaapgedeelte van mijn gezin te beschermen. Mijn familie heeft het tot nu toe overleefd, maar we worden elke minuut met de dood geconfronteerd.
Ik heb meer dan dertig jaar economische vakken, onderzoeksmethodologie en kwantitatieve gegevensanalyse gedoceerd aan verschillende Palestijnse universiteiten. Dit is mijn leven en dit is mijn wereld. Ik deed dit werk met veel plezier en kon me niet voorstellen dat er plotseling een einde aan zou komen. We hadden internationale relaties met universiteiten in Europese landen en Turkije en ook projecten met Palestijnse universiteiten, waaronder academische uitwisselingen. Vorig jaar deed ik mee aan een uitwisseling met de Technische Universiteit van Istanbul en andere collega's gingen naar Spanje, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en andere Europese landen.
Collega's, wat er in Gaza is gebeurd, is alleen maar dood en vernietiging. Er is geen veilige plek in Gaza. We gaan ervan uit dat jullie academici in de Europese landen iets voor ons kunnen doen. Ten eerste moeten jullie druk uitoefenen om de oorlog tegen Gaza en het moorden te stoppen. Jullie kunnen ook helpen om na de oorlog het hoger onderwijs in Gaza weer op te starten. Misschien door het online onderwijs te steunen na de wederopbouw van de infrastructuur van internet en elektriciteit. Sommige Palestijnse academici kunnen enkele jaren aan uw universiteiten lesgeven, totdat ze kunnen terugkeren om het onderwijs in Gaza weer op te bouwen."

Het veroordelen van Israëls genocidale aanval op onderwijs en kennis in Palestina
Wij, leden van Dutch Scholars for Palestine, veroordelen met kracht de voortdurende aanval van Israël op het onderwijs in Palestina, de vernietiging van alle universiteiten in Gaza en de terugkerende aanvallen op hoger onderwijsinstellingen op de Westelijke Jordaanoever en de rest van Palestina, als onderdeel van haar genocidale campagne.
Op 17 januari 2024 bliezen Israëlische troepen de Al-Israa Universiteit in Gaza City op, de laatste overgebleven universiteit in Gaza. In reactie hierop gaf de Birzeit Universiteit de volgende verklaring vrij: "De Birzeit Universiteit veroordeelt de brutale aanval op en het bombarderen van de campus van de Al-Israa Universiteit door de Israëlische bezetting ten zuiden van Gaza-stad, dit gebeurde na zeventig dagen van bezetting van de campus; het veranderen in hun basis en militaire kazernes voor hun strijdkrachten". Ze meldden ook dat een museum dat was opgericht door de Al-Israa Universiteit en dat meer dan 3000 zeldzame artefacten huisvestte, werd vernietigd tijdens de aanval nadat het was geplunderd door de bezettingstroepen.
Palestijnse wetenschappers in Gaza zijn het doelwit en worden gedood door Israël in de voortdurende genocidale aanval. Op 2 december 2023 doodde een Israëlische luchtaanval in de wijk Al-Falujah in Gaza professor Sufyan Tayeh, een vooraanstaand natuurkundige, toegepast wiskundige en voorzitter van de Islamitische Universiteit van Gaza. Op 7 december 2023 werd Refaat Alareer, professor in vergelijkende literatuur en een veelgeprezen dichter, gedood door een Israëlische luchtaanval in Shajaiya in het noorden van Gaza. Sinds 7 oktober 2023 heeft het Israëlische leger honderden leraren, duizenden studenten en minstens 94 universiteitsprofessoren gedood. De Verenigde Naties gaven op 24 januari 2024 een gezamenlijke verklaring uit waarin werd gewezen op het ongekende niveau van geweld in Gaza, waarbij meer dan 625.000 studenten en 22.564 leraren verstoken bleven van onderwijs en een veilige plek, en duizenden onderwijzers werden gedood.
Academische instellingen, wetenschappers en studenten in de West-Bank en de rest van Palestina worden regelmatig gearresteerd, vastgehouden zonder aanklacht of belaagd door Israëlische strijdkrachten. De Birzeit Universiteit werd meer dan 20 keer belaagd tussen 2002 en september 2023, en was het meest recentelijk het doelwit op 8 november 2023. Professor Imad Barghouti, een vooraanstaand astrofysicus aan de Al-Quds Universiteit werd op 23 oktober 2023 gearresteerd en wordt nog steeds vastgehouden zonder in staat van beschuldiging te zijn gesteld. Op 15 januari 2024 vielen Israëlische troepen de An-Najah Universiteit in Nablus binnen, mishandelden personeel en arresteerden 25 studenten die een vreedzame sit-in hielden. Palestijnse studenten aan Israëlische universiteiten worden geconfronteerd met een vijandige omgeving, met een institutionele drang naar disciplinaire maatregelen en schorsing, en werken academische instellingen actief samen met de Israëlische politie om Palestijnen als doelwit te nemen. Ten minste 74 studenten van 25 verschillende Israëlische instellingen zijn geschorst vanwege hun berichten op sociale media. Op 19 november 2023 arresteerde de Israëlische politie bij zonsopgang vier vrouwelijke studenten van het Nof HaGalil Technology College, waarbij hun familiehuizen werden binnengevallen en doorzocht, alleen vanwege hun interactie met berichten op sociale media over de oorlog.
Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh, een van de advocaten van het Zuid-Afrikaanse juridische team bij het Internationaal Gerechtshof op 11 januari 2024, zei: "Bijna 90.000 Palestijnse universiteitsstudenten kunnen niet naar de universiteit in Gaza. Meer dan 60 procent van de scholen, bijna alle universiteiten en talloze boekhandels en bibliotheken zijn beschadigd of vernietigd, en honderden leraren en academici zijn gedood, waaronder decanen van universiteiten en vooraanstaande Palestijnse geleerden, waardoor de vooruitzichten voor het toekomstige onderwijs van Gazaanse kinderen en jongeren zijn uitgeput".
Wij, leden van Dutch Scholars for Palestine, dringen er bij de Colleges van Bestuur van alle Nederlandse universiteiten en andere instellingen voor hoger onderwijs op aan om de genocide, scholasticide en epistemicide te veroordelen die door Israël in Palestina wordt gepleegd. Daarom doen wij de volgende dringende oproep aan de besturen van alle universiteiten en andere instellingen voor hoger onderwijs in Nederland:
Veroordeel en roep publiekelijk op tot de beëindiging van de genocide die door Israël wordt gepleegd in Gaza, Palestina.
Geef onmiddellijk een publieke verklaring uit waarin de Israëlische aanval op Palestijnse universiteiten, scholen en andere instellingen van hoger onderwijs en het doden van academici, docenten en studenten wordt veroordeeld; en waarin ondubbelzinnige solidariteit wordt betuigd met universiteiten en docenten in Gaza en Palestina als geheel.
Noodbeurzen te creëren voor onderzoekers, docenten en studenten uit Gaza en Palestina als geheel die in Nederland willen komen werken of studeren.
Samenwerkingsverbanden op te zetten met Palestijnse universiteiten en academici en het opzetten van (online) cursussen over Palestina door Palestijnse wetenschappers te faciliteren.
